Cycle Manoa’s Spring 2013 Bike Sale will occur on Saturday 1/19/13 at 1:00PM at our bike shop (click Find Us link above for our location). Bikes will range from free to $80. Registered UH Manoa students will receive a free bicycle light set courtesy of the Student Athletic Fee Committee (UHM student ID required). New and used cycling accessories (racks, helmets, etc.) will also be available for purchase. Starting at 12:30 you can sign up on the buyer’s list – at 1PM names will be called in the order they appear on the list. Please bring CASH ONLY and your patience. This a great chance to get a bicycle and start riding to school, work, anywhere!

Commuter Cycling Classes

Once again the Hawaii Bicycle League is offering commuter cycling classes around Honolulu. Below is a press release published by HBL.

“What Does Your Commute Look Like? Learn to Commute by Bike With the Hawaii Bicycling League’s Free Commuter Cycling Workshop

Funded by a grant from the Department of Transportation, The Hawaii Bicycling League’s free Commuter Cycling 101 workshop aims to get people out of their cars and onto bikes in an effort to make Oahu a cleaner, greener, place to live. The workshop is 2 hours long, and teaches people how to safely navigate traffic by bike. 30 minutes of the workshop are spent going over safety tips, such as how to take the lane, make left turns, and avoid common crashes. The rest of the class offers actual road riding experience.

Classes are taught by instructors certified by the League of American Bicyclists, and will be held every weekend during the months of January through May, at UH Manoa, Kapiolani Community College, Eki Cyclery, Leeward Community College, and other locations around the island. Classes are capped at 15 students, and each student will receive gift certificates, water bottles, patch kits, and other freebies from our sponsoring bike shops: BIKE FACTORY, The Bike Shop, Eki Cyclery, Island Triathalon & Bike, McCully Bicycle and Sporting Goods, in addition to safety materials printed by the Hawaii Bicycling League.

Register for classes and view the full schedule at hbl.org/commutercycling101. The first students to register receive the most valuable gift certificates, though everyone that attends walks away with something. Though the class is held primarily at college campuses, it’s open to all demographics ages 16 and up.”

done. It’s official – DTS announced tonight that bike lanes will installed on Waialae AVE. Many many thanks to all the supporters out there, this was truly a grassroots initiative. Cyclists were the overwhelming majority of the audience tonight, awesome to see so many like-minded people united at one place for a common cause.

We need you there! The Department of Transportation Services is holding a community meeting to provide new information on the progress of incorporating bike lanes onto Waialae Ave. It is expected that a final decision will be announced and details provided in favor of a bike friendly Waialae. If you ride a bicycle, you need to be there to: 1) show Honolulu what this means to the cycling, 2) demonstrate to other communities what can be achieved through a desire for change, 3) let you voice be heard in the case that an unfavorable decision is announced. Let’s finish this campaign with a strong showing.

SUMMER BIKE SALE!!!

Cycle Manoa is having a bike sale Sunday, July 8th. This sale will differ than ones in the past in a few ways. The sale will occur at our shop on a weekend as opposed to on a weekday on campus and the sale is open to everyone, not just students. As with our other sales, first come first served so show up early. Cash only. UH students with valid student IDs will receive bike lights courtesy of the Student Athletic Fee Committee So swing by and pick up a bike for low cost or no cost and start enjoying the benefits of cycling.

A Midsummer Message

Hello Everyone!

Sorry for our lack of communiqués lately. We are operating with few souls with many members being gone for the summer. Rest assured we are still in operation though. Our schedule will be changing in July, however, due to our limited volunteer base.

Open shop will be closed Wednesday July 4th – enjoy the holiday! The shop will also be closed the following Sunday 7/8 due since we will be having our summer sale earlier that day – see post. Following this week, Cycle Manoa will be open ONLY on Sundays, from 6 to 8. However, this will now be a combined volunteer and open shop night. Once school starts in Mid August, we’ll be returning to our normal hours.

Complete Waialae (Update)

Thursday’s community outreach event went smashingly. With attendance close to 200 people and overwhelming support, the meeting seems to have brought us one step closer to a complete Waialae ave. The event was even featured on two local major news networks.
